Manifesting Something? Try a Vision Board

As a self-professed manifestation coach, I’ve been making vision boards before they were trendy. Teenage me would pour over stacks of old magazines and excitedly rip out page after page of all the things I wanted. Over the years, so many of those things have come to fruition. Dream career? Check! Soulmate? Yup! Bylines in Cosmopolitan? Done! In other words, vision boards work.

Curious to learn more about vision boards for manifestation? I chatted with fellow mystical babe Natalia Benson, a conscious business coach, money mentor, and astrologer, on all things vision boards, including what they are, how to make one, and what to do to activate their magical powers.

Wait, what’s a vision board?

“A vision board is a board, which can be physical or digital, that is a conglomeration of images that reflect desires that you have for your life and would love to fulfill and experience,” Benson says. What makes a vision board magick, she adds, is that images are the language of the subconscious mind. They’re responsible for helping us bring those desires to fruition.

How to make a vision board

1. Find a board

You can make a physical, tangible vision board out of a foam or poster board. Or if you’re a tech-savvy mystic, you can make a digital version using any app or photo editing program like Canva (bonus: It’s free). Although they are more time and energy-intensive, Benson prefers a physical vision, but notes that digital vision boards can be just as powerful.

2. Find images you vibe with

Next, gather all your inspo images. Benson recommends using Pinterest or Google to find pictures to print out, or go old school and rip cut images you vibe with from your favorite magazine. The key, Benson says, is to find images that “activate and inspire you” and represent things you want to manifest into your life—a dream house, more money, a new vibrator, whatevs.

3. Include short-term and long-term goals

For your vision board, you can focus on short-term or long-term goals, or mix it up. “There is so much magic when you’re willing to dream those bigger dreams,” Benson says. Even if those dreams feel out of reach right now, she says, “There is so much power in seeing those images and focusing on them over a long period of time.”

4. Adds words and phrases, if you want

This step is optional, but if there are certain words, phrases, or magical mantras that light you up (e.g., “I’m the baddest bitch in town” or “I’m a money magnet”), Benson recommends adding them to your vision board. “Your vision board is really a space to inspire and activate your energy; that’s really what it’s for,” she says.

5. Put it all together

Lastly, you’ll need to make it official and glue down the images onto your vision board (if it’s physical) or finalize your digital board. At this point, you can keep it simple with just dreamy images, or let your freak flag fly and go wild with stickers and glitter. Up to you! “You can do whatever,” Benson says. “That’s the fun thing about the vision board—it’s so creative.”

How to use your vision board for manifestation

Okay, you made your board!!! Now what?

Vibe with your vision board daily

Once your vision board is complete, ignite its magick by looking at it daily. For digital vision boards, Benson suggests saving it as your phone or desktop’s wallpaper so you’ll see it constantly. For a physical vision board, she recommends placing it somewhere you can see it from your bed. Nighttime, she says, is an especially potent time for working with your vision board: Our subconscious minds are most impressionable just before we fall asleep.

Take action

According to Benson, manifestation is a two-part process. It’s part visioning—that’s where working with your vision board comes in—and part action. “The universe has to co-create with us,” Benson says. “We can’t just sit back.” For instance, if you want a dream job, actions might include sprucing up your resume, sending in an application, and preparing for (and then crushing!) your interview.

The cool thing about vision board work, Benson adds, is that when your subconscious mind soaks up all the images, you’ll start to get prompts, either internal (aka your intuition) or external on what kind of actions will move you closer to your goal.

Don’t worry about “when”

For vision boards to work, you have to release attachments to when things will manifest. “Don’t put pressure on yourself or the universe to deliver your vision board in a specific timeline,” Benson says. “Surrender is a big part of the vision boarding process, but it also makes it a lot of fun to just trust the process.”

Take it easy

And finally, when it comes to vision boards, know that you can’t do it wrong. “As long as it activates you and you’re willing to engage with your vision board regularly, that’s the recipe for really experiencing the joy and the fruits of the power of a vision board,” Benson says.
