Director Leo Carax has opened up about the part in his new movie Annette that he had written for Rihanna.

Part of the pitch of the film to buyers, which stars Adam Driver and Marion Cottillard, was that the 33-year-old musician would be part of it.

According to Leo‘s interview with USA Today, Rihanna‘s part was just a cameo.

“It was a small part written specifically for her,” he shared. “She was supposed to play herself [Rihanna].”

Leo added that “when Baby Annette becomes famous, there was a duet between the puppet and Rihanna. But then Rihanna feels upstaged by this baby.”

The movie centers on the romance between comedian Henry (Driver) and Ann (Cotillard), a world-renowned opera singer, whose child turns out to be a mysterious little girl with an exceptional destiny, will turn their lives upside down.

Annette is currently playing in select theaters and will begin streaming August 20 on Amazon Prime Video.
