Whoopi Goldberg has admitted it’s a dream of hers to star in Doctor Who and we’re already thinking of ways to make it happen.

The acting legend, 65, said she would love to star in the BBC sci-fi series not as just any character, but the titular Time Lord themselves.

With Jodie Whittaker stepping down as the first female Doctor in 2022, could we have found her replacement?

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Whoopi said: ‘I wanted to be Doctor Who and I still do. I think it would mean an evolution into being American and I don’t know that that’s correct for Doctor Who.’

However, she’s prepared to sacrifice her dream to keep the show authentically British: ‘As much as I love it, I love watching it still in all the iterations.

‘There are certain things that are blatantly all English. Doctor Who is like that to me. It’s like Marmite. It’s very English and needs to stay that way.’

Whoopi previously revealed she actually tried to land the role at one point, but BBC bosses turned her down. No, we can’t understand why either.

She told former Doctor Who star David Tennant on his podcast in 2019: ‘The idea of that just so made me happy. But they were like, “Um, no.”‘

This week, the Sister Act star also revealed she’s a big fan of EastEnders after watching the soap when it aired on BBC America.

She added: ‘I got very involved in it and then it was gone.

‘I was shouting, “Where is Peggy? Where is that woman with the cigarette? Dot Cotton! Where is she?”

‘I loved all those actors and was sad that they stopped showing it in the U.S. It should get done here, but it would take too much explaining.’

And whilst Whoopi has enjoyed a 40-year career, she admitted it has taken a long time for her to become someone with influence in the industry.

She explained that ‘clout’ helps ‘get a lot done,’ but assured aspiring actors that not being well-known ‘doesn’t mean you’re not trying.’

The Ghost star, who bagged an Oscar for best supporting actress, also confessed she’s ‘glad’ to be where she is now, but it’s ‘taken some time’ to make things happen and gain status in a saturated industry.
