Remote working saw a major boom across different countries, especially in 2020 after the deadly pandemic spread across the globe. Quite a few people were left with no choice but to work remotely from the safety of their homes.

Many companies are successfully handling this culture and managing their remote team effectively for great results. But there are also businesses that, for a variety of reasons, are struggling to make things work. The biggest challenge with managing a remote team is to have all the members on the same page. This is impossible without proper communication among the team members. Many businesses fail to understand that and ignore the signs of ineffective communication within the team. As a result, their business has to face a lot of challenges.

But we don’t want that to happen to you. Here are four important signs of ineffective communication that you need to recognize before it starts affecting your company.

1. Very Little Or No Communication

To maintain a successful remote work culture, you need to have strong communication among your team members. It’s extremely important for you and your team to know how to communicate in different situations. 

Many businesses use various communication platforms such as Slack or Discord to more efficiently communicate with their team members. Doing this helps you keep your team in the loop about the latest events related to the company. This boosts employee efficiency, which in turn, can increase their productivity as well.

You too can use such tools to ensure that your members are effectively communicating with each other. You can also let them know how to do that based on the urgency of the situation. This can be achieved through a chat channel, direct messaging, via email or through a telephone call. When they know what you expect them to do in different situations, they’ll take firmer steps to fulfill your expectations and maintain effective communication with the other members.

2. Too Much Communication

Just like less communication isn’t a healthy sign for your remote team, communicating too much can mean the same. If a certain team member is bombarding you with messages, group chats or emails, it should be pretty clear that a communication gap has arisen.

This can happen because they failed to comprehend what you wanted to convey and need more information about the matter. Another possible reason could be to gain attention. Their behavior may be a result of them feeling ignored or disregarded. You should try to identify the source of the problem and solve it as soon as possible.

3. Missed Deadlines

Another sign of ineffective communication is missed deadlines. Your team might not complete their tasks on time every once in a while due to some extenuating circumstances. But doing it repeatedly can be a matter of concern. One major reason behind this could be miscommunication among the team members.

To combat this issue, you should assign and track the tasks of your team members regularly. Break large tasks into smaller ones to encourage them to complete them on time. Every time a smaller task is completed, they will feel motivated to work on the next one and complete it on time.

Before doing that, make sure that your team knows exactly what is expected from them. Once the task is completed by a member, ask them to mark it complete through whatever task management system you’ve set up. This action will help you know if your team is on track or not.

4. Lack Of Collaboration Tools

If you have just started your business, it may be possible for you to communicate one-on-one with your team on a more regular basis. However, as your team grows, achieving this goal will likely become arduous. This could result in ineffective communication, which in turn, can lead to various other problems and tank your productivity. 

To avoid falling into this trap, start using collaborative tools for your business. This will instantly solve your problem and make it easier for you to manage your remote team more efficiently.

Managing a remote team can sometimes be challenging and a large part of this comes from the lack of proper communication with the team members. But if you can handle this problem, working and managing your remote team will likely become much easier.
