Council Post: Working From Home? Eight Tips To Schedule Your Day For Maximum Productivity

Working from home has become the norm for many professionals during the pandemic. However, not every remote employee has found the ideal way to plan their workday. It can be difficult to focus when handling your tasks from home, especially if there are other family members or distractions present during your working hours.

That’s why eight Young Entrepreneur Council members offered their insights on how remote employees can best schedule their day. Here’s how you can create a daily plan that promotes productivity and focus.

1. Schedule Breaks

I think people need to know where their mental bandwidth is during different times of day. Sometimes scheduling blocks in your calendar can be really helpful. It’s also crucial to make sure that you have real breaks during those blocks. – Richard Fong, Automatic Growth

2. Do What Interests You In That Moment

The tendency is to work on the most important things first, but this doesn’t account for the ebbs and flows of energy and productivity when working remotely. Instead, I’d recommend setting goals for the week and then picking items off your to-do list that seem the most interesting at that moment. 3. Don’t Delay Self-Care

Before I started my digital agency, I was a solopreneur who worked across multiple time zones, so the remote schedule and management is nothing new for me. My remote schedule advice is to wake up early at 6 a.m., read for a minimum of an hour, exercise or walk for 30 minutes, start work at 9 a.m. and tackle all the hard tasks (the big fish first), then devote the afternoon to meetings and admin work. Many founders talk about self-care and culture as an after-work practice, but I recommend it before getting started! You will notice from my schedule that my most important work is prioritized and is first on the list: me time! 4. Exercise Daily

One of the worst parts of us working from home is that we aren’t getting in the movement required to commute and move around an office. Getting out and getting some aerobic exercise where you bring your heart rate up for 30 minutes or so is incredibly important. We encourage all of our employees to schedule 30-60 minutes a day to get away from the screens and move their bodies. It’s night and day in terms of energy levels and attitude between the people who actually commit to this and the people who do not. – Tony Scherba, Yeti

5. Make A Plan The Night Before

Plan your next day the evening before. This simple trick is helpful in a couple of ways. First, it keeps your thoughts organized and lets you relax after a tough workday. You will know you have all your ideas and tasks written down so you are less likely to be ruminating about them or worrying you might forget something. 6. Get Key Tasks Out Of The Way

I find that getting the most important tasks out of the way earlier in the day makes for the best results. You not only become more productive, but you also feel more satisfied. Most people tend to have more energy early on in the day too. If you can structure your day so that critical tasks and meetings are done early, then you’ll use your focus and energy on the important things. Other tasks that have more time or are less pressure anyway can be done with a more casual frame of mind later in the day. Start by waking up early and creating a morning routine. Set big tasks for early in the day. Then take a break and get the rest done in the afternoon so that you have your evening to yourself. – Syed Balkhi, WPBeginner

7. Batch Together Important Tasks

Batching together important tasks is an effective way for remote workers to maximize their productivity. I find that scheduling my calls for one morning a week, reviewing all content for upcoming projects in the afternoon or developing funnels for new product or service launches at once to be an efficient way of completing work. – Kristin Kimberly Marquet, Marquet Media, LLC

8. Automate Whatever You Can

To schedule your day and stay productive, you can use the help of online tools and software to keep you on track. Alarms go a long way in helping you stay focused for a short period of time so you can concentrate on one big task and get it out of the way. You can also use automation software to automate recurring tasks and save yourself time and resources.
