Masters Betting Market Report: Golf’s Elite Taking Most Bets

The first major championship of 2021 has arrived, and the pre-tournament golf betting action suggests record wagering and a wide open tournament at The Masters. The 2021 Masters will be the biggest betting event of the PGA TOUR season, and surpass the record handles of the 2019 and 2020 Masters.

“The return to form of Jordan Spieth has grabbed bettors attention,” DraftKings director of sportsbook operations Johnny Avello told TheLines this week. “But the wave of betting action has been steady, and increased wagering this week with DJ, Bryson and Justin Thomas very popular picks.”

And DJ, of course, is Dustin Johnson, who was the Round 1 co-leader after shooting 65 on his way to winning the rescheduled November Masters in record fashion with a 20-under-par winning score. Justin Thomas finished fourth, and Bryson DeChambeau, the hot player and pre-tournament buzz in betting, finished tied for 34th.

Another reason for record betting in this year’s Masters is in-play wagering, and the continued expansion of legalized betting in America. Avello noted DraftKings is now in 14 jurisdictions, when last November the leading sportsbook operator was in 11 states.

“The in-play market is going to be big for this year’s Masters,” Avello added. “There is continued growing interest in golf, and the variety of bets during each round of the tournament is appealing to bettors, beyond just the adjusted odds to win.”

The Masters is the only major championship which has a field that is exclusively determined by invitation. Just 88 players will tee it up at Augusta National Golf Club this week. That includes the best in the world with the top-50 players in the world golf rankings all shooting for a green jacket.

Our PGA TOUR power rankings have Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm on top heading into the tournament, followed by Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay . There is little separation in odds to win the Masters for the top-five players from +950 to +1200 before a dropoff to marquee names like Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Brooks Koepka and Collin Morikawa.

First Round Leader Market Report

The First Round Leader market is very popular, and bettors at BetMGM have loaded up more than 25% of the market on two players: Justin Thomas (13.5%) and Jordan Spieth (12.2%).

“First Round Leader is one of the most popular prop bets in golf betting. Jordan Spieth has received the most bets after winning last week’s tour event, and at +1800 to be the First Round Leader, he is our biggest liability heading into the tournament,” said BetMGM vice president of trading Jason Scott.

The next most popular players in first round handle are PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa (7.3%), Brooks Koepka (5.7%), Dustin Johnson (5.4%), U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau (4.8%) and Webb Simpson (4.6%). The largest bet count is Spieth (10.2%), Thomas (7.7%) and Johnson (5.9%).

Masters Props and Matchups

DraftKingsFanDuelPointsBet, BetMGM and William Hill all have dozens of head-to-head tournament match-ups. Avello said John Rahm (-125) is taking 80% of the money over Bryson DeChambeau, and the odds have pushed up from the opener of -120.

But two other notable tournament match-ups have drawn even greater one-sided action with more than 90% of the money on Patrick Cantlay (-120) over Rory McIlroy, and Jordan Spieth (-162) over Scottie Scheffler. Cantlay opened pick ‘em and Spieth -133 with odds on both players rising sharply.
