- Donald Trump Jr. thinks a destroyed George Floyd mural in Ohio might be a sign from God.
- “I mean you have to wonder if … a higher power, is telling us something here?!?” he wrote.
- Don Jr. made the comments in a lengthy caption on an Instagram post.
In a 131 word Instagram caption, Donald Trump Jr. speculated that the destruction of a George Floyd mural in Toledo, Ohio might be a sign from God.
Witnesses and the Toledo Police say it was destroyed by a lightning strike, according to the local ABC affiliate.
“This will drive some people nuts but oh well,” Don Jr. wrote in his Instagram caption. “I mean you have to wonder if someone, like a higher power, is telling us something here?!?”
The former president’s son tried to explain his theory along the lines of false idolatry.
“Obviously what happened to George Floyd should never happen anywhere!!!” Don Jr. continued. “That said, objectively speaking, given his history I’m not sure turning him into a deity and a role model for our children is exactly the right idea either.”
Don Jr. has posted controversial statements to Instagram before.
The Facebook-owned social media site hid one of his posts from April 2020 because it contained “partly false information” on Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer agreeing with former President Donald Trump’s travel ban at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As Insider’s Rachel Greenspan reported, Don Jr. has a history of spreading misinformation on Instagram beyond his more common incendiary posts.
Some conservatives and pro-Trump personalities with large followings have long speculated — without evidence — that Floyd’s killing by convicted Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was not an egregious act of police brutality, but rather part of some sort of conspiracy.
Fox News host Jesse Watters once speculated that Floyd’s killing was “a premeditated hit,” while his Fox colleague Tucker Carlson told viewers that they were being lied to about Floyd’s death and other prominent cases of police killing unarmed Black men.
