Must-know promotions, exits, and hires at VC firms like Andreessen Horowitz, CRV, and Initialized Capital

  • After it banked a $6 billion fortune on Coinbase, Andreessen Horowitz has raised a new $2.2 billion fund and hired five heavy-hitters to ramp the firm’s crypto investing arm, led by Chris Dixon and Kathryn Haun.
    • Tomicah Tillemann joins later this summer as global head of policy. He’s previously served as an advisor to now-President Joe Biden and was a speechwriter for Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of state.
    • Andreessen Horowitz has hired Rachael Horwitz from Google to lead marketing and communications for the crypto investing team. The firm got to know Horwitz as the first head of communications at Coinbase.
    • The team has also added three advisors, including Bill Hinman, a former director of the division of corporation finance at the Securities and Exchange Commission. He reinforces the firm’s regulatory compliance expertise.
    • The other two advisors are Brent McIntosh, a former high-ranking official of the Treasury for International Affairs, and Alex Price, an entrepreneur who previously started a quantitative research and trading firm.
    • Andreessen Horowitz is also promoting Anthony Albanese, who came on board last year from the New York Stock Exchange, to become chief operating officer. He will lead the growing crypto investing team.
  • The hiring spree continues at Andreessen Horowitz with the addition of David Haber as a general partner. Haber was most recently a vice president in the firmwide strategy unit at Goldman Sachs, where he led investing and mergers and acquisitions. He is the firm’s first partner to be hired and remain in New York, he tells Insider.
  • Matt Garratt is leaving Salesforce Ventures, where he was the first employee, to join early-stage venture firm CRV. Murat Bicer, a general partner at CRV, says Garratt’s “enterprise investing chops are bar none.” Garratt led Salesforce to become one of tech’s most active corporate investors, with deals at Zoom, Snowflake, and MuleSoft.
  • Barry Eggers, founding partner of Lightspeed Venture Partners, has ended his standard one-year term as chairman of the National Venture Capital Association, the industry’s main lobbying group.
  • The National Venture Capital Association has appointed Michael Brown, a general partner at Battery Ventures, to take the helm. His job is to champion the trade group’s members and their portfolio companies in Washington, and to work with the Biden administration on initiatives from immigration reform to infrastructure.
  • WeWork’s Livingston Miller has left to become the first general counsel at Initialized Capital, the venture capital firm started by Alexis Ohanian and Garry Tan. Miller will spearhead all legal and compliance efforts.
